It is time to continue boycotting Israel

Note: the following post updates the earlier Crocwatch post, titled ‘It’s time to boycott Israel‘.

We get news that now, ever so conveniently, the Israeli government has decided to call it quits with its operation in Gaza. Having completed its war crimes, Olmert’s government cunningly decides to remove its tanks, jets, helicopters and soldiers. All these can and will now go back home—or so we are told—and will do so congratulating themselves on a job well done. The ‘so we are told’ is an important qualification because, as the next post in this blog explains, one view is that Israel has decided to stop its full-blown offensive, but not the kind of attacks it has perpetrated on Gaza since the 2002 offensive on the West Bank. How convenient it would be for the Israelis to claim to withdraw from Gaza, even as their forces continue to hit military and of course civilian targets at will, and with on-going impunity.

If this is the scenario that they’ve planned for, Olmert and the rest of the people who supported Israel’s criminal acts will perhaps hope to slow, if not to stop the economic boycott before it really starts to bite. It goes without saying that the Israeli government must be proven wrong. The message to this, and to the next far-right wing Israeli government must be that war crimes have lasting political and economic consequences, and will not escape unpunished. That Israel will suffer the consequences of it actions until the day that it sits down to negotiate with all of the Palestinian groups, and does so in a way that truly recognises Palestinians’ right to a free homeland—free from further atrocities of the kind committed over the last days by the Israeli state, but also free from the kind of economic oppression that transforms proud Palestinians into the de facto slaves of the Israeli war machine.

Crocwatch will thereby continue to support the boycott, and will engage in an on-going investigation with practical suggestions as to how best to make the Israeli economy hurt where it hurts most. Watch this space!
